about

I recorded this stuff after getting back from spending 6 weeks at the start of 2012 loafing in Chicago and turning 30 in Las Vegas. I recall then dedicating pretty much the whole of Feb and March just to learning how to drive and recording music. I would spend daytimes getting stressed out behind the wheel, highly endangering my life and those of others, then unwound in the evenings by fiddling with music.

Untitled 4 features the first drumbeat programmed from scratch that actually sounded pretty much like I wanted it to. Also contains samples of Jack Nicholson from Five Easy Pieces and the main guy from The Hurt Locker, and some harmonising sax-sounding instruments. I was really happy with how this turned out.

Leap was another thing that ended up having 3546242 guitar overdubs on it. One of them was the weird alien squiggly sound near the start that I would never know how to replicate. The drums on this one are a bit strange; I think I got overconfident after doing the one before. Voices are taken from Schindler's List which is a movie I guess I only got round to seeing last spring.

Success is another one with a slightly strange structure that I probably spent most time with figuring out drum sounds. I think there was meant to be some kind of thematic link between the two samples (from Factotum and Memento) but nothing so important that I can remember it. The electric piano thingy at the end was a last-second addition.

Fortune marks the start of when I began messing around with breakbeats a bit rather than trying to program everything from scratch. The result sounds a bit more upbeat, maybe. I forgot to edit one thing about the drums which is annoying me now. Oh well. Samples include the voiceover from the intro of one of my fave movies ever, Mean Streets, and Richard Nixon talking about David Frost being fortunate.

Untitled 5 is possibly notable for the extended hate-everybody rant by Edward Norton from 25th Hour and having lots of guitar non-playing. Some big whooshing noises too, which I don't remember recording.

Creatures features a very famous breakbeat, some extremely phased guitars, and snippets from a reading of a rather pessimistic passage written by someone who might possibly be Richard Dawkins. This one and Untitled 4 are definitely my favourites of these songs, topping and tailing.
